Azir Sandler, a political prisoner in the camps for over 20 years holding some of his string containing memory knots. Not allowed access to pen or paper, Azir, resorted to coded knots to tell his story of his time in prison. Still living in Magadan where he was exiled on release, Azir, now 80 worked as a doctor qualifying after studying with the older prisoners.
'It was the best university in the world', he exclaimed, 'Thousands of interlectuals from all over the Soviet Union were imprisoned here!'
