Tamba Banks of the Jaru tribe, whose family once lived in the Bungle Bungles, [known to her people as Billingjal], is one of the traditional owners of the Purnululu national park. Bungle Bungle is the 'whitefellas's' name for the range of rocks: Purnululu is an aboriginal word but the correct
term for the rocks is Billingjal meaning 'sand falling away' which is what hapens when the fragile earth is cracked. Tamba Banks want to preserve the ecosystem and the culture of the Bungles but the remote and unspoilt area is being trampled by visitors, up dramatically from 35,000 in 2002.
