Gunter Demnic. German 'action artist' working in Cologne, Germany.

His life project is to make brass plaques embedded onto cobble stones honouring people killed in the Holocaust. These individual stones are put into the pavement outside the homes of victims. Starting with over 2000 plaques placed in the streets of Cologne the momentum is spreading throghout Germany. Each stone, which he calls a stumbling-stone, is individually made using the Gestapo's records for locating the addresses of the displaced famillies. 90% of the victims were Jewish but also included were Gypsies, politicals, homosexuals and the mentally insane.
