Moscow

These photographs date from 1982 when I visited the USSR for the first time, part of an Intourist group visiting Moscow over Christmas and the New Year. It was a surreal journey; the cold war had become distinctly colder with US president Reagan talking about “the evil empire” and a dying Andropov convinced that a nuclear strike was coming. On the street, most people were more concerned with finding enough vodka and food to enjoy an icy Christmas.

Moscow is available, with a selection of these images, from Cafe Royal Books https://www.caferoyalbooks.com/
