Albania
My first book on Albania was in 1990, just after the fall of the Berlin wall, when it was the last bastion of communism, isolated from the rest of the world and hostile to any press or photography. The northern area of the country was closed, and posing as an archaeologist, I was continually followed and questioned while travelling through it. The following year, revolution had changed everything everything changed and the second book is based on my journey through a country in a state of anarchy up to the isolated villages in the northern mountains where little had changed for hundreds of years and where they follow the maxim: “A stranger and god are the same”.
